An Outsider's Perspective.

You might've thought that Jesus himself had showed up in Golden Gate Park this weekend, judging by the wave of humanity that excitedly passed through the Hayes Valley - Upper Haight corridor yesterday afternoon as the OutsideLandsMusicFestival kicked off, promising the first night of amplified music in the park after dark, EVAR.

It didn't take long, though, for the pilgrims to plainly distinguish themselves from anything remotely resembling seeking salvation. More like, reeking from inebriation. Flasks in pockets, running and shouting through the neighborhood and bringing a drunken liveliness to Hayes Street not seen since, well, the Bay To Breakers (Bacchanal On Wheels) just a few months ago.

To be fair, there were plenty of clusters of co-walking folks from Danville and Castro Valley and from wherever else trying not to look out of place. But seeing so many people hurrying in the same direction makes you kinda obvious.

Meanwhile, the RV's are starting to make their way through the streets, picking up plastic crates and (other) excited middle-class white people going to pursue "The American Dream" at Burning Man of all places - a dry dusty lake bed in the middle of Nevada.

I chose not to go either myself, forgoing both an historic music event of apparently epic proportions and a notoriously transformational experience in the desert to focus on my own music projects, which have looming and ever-encroaching deadlines. $300-$1,500 and 3-10 days of time spent losing myself in some form or another didn't feel right to me in light of what's on my plate right now.

And, I have to say it's been kind of hard hearing Radiohead's Kick Drum from 4 miles away and not want to be floating in that sea of humanity. With so many fellow music lovers in the park even as I write this, I feel like a cultural counterpoint of sorts.

So it's been interesting to be an otherwise sympathetic outsider, so to speak, to the Outside Lands Music Festival and witnessing the impact on the festival from the literal fringe - the neighborhoods hosting. This morning I came out to find an orange street cone placed on the roof of my car and a beer bottle smashed on my stoop. Wooo!! RADIOHEAD!!! WOOOo!!! AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!!

The festival, to its creators' credit has done an awesome job following the San Francisco music tradition started by Bill Graham, presenting a diverse lineup of world-class artists. The festival's local and online marketing suggests a "Green" festival, but paying $300 and buying $10 beers you have to wait an hour to get (according to a friend who was there last night) will undoubtedly (I suspect as it usually does) give folks a sense of entitlement to lose their grip on their rubbish while they get trashed.

The festival has been getting national press, too. 6 million google results across all kinds of media (pitchfork, rolling stone, etc) From what I've seen from the outskirts of the park, it's pretty f-in hyooj. Another pin prick for San Francisco in the giant music map in the sky and a relative pain in the ass for the folks in the hood.

Ch Ch Changes

Below from Beliefnet's Top 10:

10 Ways to Handle Change

Life's transitions are ultimately positive, even if they don't always feel it. Here's how to navigate them gracefully. By Ariane de Bonvoisin

Everyone experiences change--it may be a job change, relationship change, health change, or a change you've initiated that suddenly seems daunting. If you find change difficult, you're not alone. Many people think change is hard. But it's possible for the change you're going through to be easier, smoother, and less stressful--you can find the positive in transitions and learn to love your life more...you can become a Change Optimist.

Accepting Change (one of the tips):
When change happens, you often look longingly back to what used to be. You don't like where the river of life seems to be taking you, so you cling to the rocks or row vigorously upstream--that's what makes change tough!
Accept change by taking in your new circumstances without fighting, arguing, explaining, or asking "What if?" It may be difficult at first, but you will soon see that life will lead you through this change and into a place of greater happiness and peace.

Bottle Shock

This is a great film; highly recommend it. Big cheers.

A movie about the historic 1976 Paris wine tasting where Napa Valley wines form Chateau Montelena and Stags Leap beat out the French for top prize in varietal. Jim Barrett and Warren Winiarski, two of the vintners who changed the face of winemaking and put Napa Valley on the map.....
http://www.bottleshockthemovie.com/

Got a bit nostalgic from the winery days at Lynch Valley Ranch and the Lynch Knoll vineyards, where famed winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett made our wine. Heidi is also Beau Barrett's wife (he's a star of this film's story) - good people. Wine is in people's blood in the valley, and if you get there - check out Gustavo Thrace too, tasting room in Napa.

Pix from our Vineyards in Napa. Beautiful countryside. Amazing wines.

Floral Goddess

Fresh Flowers are powerful - we're drawn into their intricate design beauty and escentuals.
Keeping a steady flow of fresh StarGazer Lillies at all times in the loft and got to wondering more about these flowers and why we might be particularly drawn to certain types. A few of my favs;

Lily.
To the ancient Egyptians, the trumpet-shaped lily was a symbol of Upper Egypt, the southern part of the country. In the ancient Near East, the lily was associated with Ishtar, also known as Astarte, who was a goddess of creation and fertility as well as a virgin. The Greeks and Romans linked the lily with the queen of the gods, called Hera by the Greeks and Juno by the Romans. The lily was also one of the symbols of the Roman goddess Venus.

Lotus:
The lotus shares some associations with the lily. Lotus flowers, which bloom in water, can represent female sexual power and fertility as well as birth or rebirth. The ancient Egyptians portrayed the goddess Isis being born from a lotus flower, and they placed lotuses in the hands of their mummified dead to represent the new life into which the dead souls had entered.

Love Is Stronger than Death

This song by The The ('the' talented Matt Johnson) is remarkable and one I always seemed to enjoy listening to most from the most from The DUSK record.
Soul Mining was another favourite from this artist. Deep.

Rolling Stone Magazine's review of the record said, in part -
If the unconscious mind could speak for itself, what would it say? That is the question singer-songwriter Matt Johnson and the The attempt to answer on Dusk. On three previous the The recordings, Johnson always asked difficult questions about human frailty and psychic vulnerability, though not without flinching. By contrast, the songs on Dusk are written in the language of raw need.

Perfect summertime urban adventuring in the cityscape; Potrero Hill's got some great rides- used to live on one of them. Steep! The street luge was popular there too.

808 State

From Tina Marie Daily-http://www.tinamariedaly.com/

The current dominant calendar system presents a highly charged energetic event on August 8th, 2008. The numerology of this day is a rare geometric, symmetric alignment. 8-8-2008 breaks down as 8 +8 + 2 + 8 = 26. 2 +6 =8...four eights. A day bounded by 8's is a most favorable configuration within the collective consciousness of the consensus. Eight represents energy, vitality, affluence and prosperity.

Don't miss this special night:
Tina will be offering a special course this Friday 8/8/08 7:30-9:00pm in LA

A Burning Man gourmet appetizer of visionary art, dancing, shrine creation, and elevating films, all tied together by a blasphemously reverent sermon. A SACRED UPROAR sung into being by Rob Brezsny .-.^.-. Is the SACRED UPROAR a medicine show or a revival meeting? A ritual designed to invoke ingenious love or an experiment in rowdy bliss? An invitation to worship deities that know how to laugh or a license to commit blasphemous reverence?

ROB BREZSNY is an aspiring master of curiosity, a macho feminist, and founder of the Beauty and Truth Lab. He writes "Free Will Astrology," a weekly column that has appeared in the Village Voice for over nine years, as well as in the SF Weekly and 120 other publications. Brezsny's latest book is "Pronoia Is the Antidote for Paranoia: How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings." Novelist Tom Robbins read it and said, "I've seen the future of American literature and its name is Rob Brezsny."

Trashy Habits

There are still people I talk with who know nothing about "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" . Now wondering, what has happened to this thing?

Here's the background 411

The size of this mass believe it or not equivalent to that of the continental United States.

This huge garbage island is actually two different but linked areas – The Eastern Garbage Patch, is located between Hawaii and California and said to be the size of Texas. The Western Garbage Patch, spreads from the east of Japan to the west of Hawaii.

The patches are connected by a thin 6,000-mile long current called the Subtropical Convergence Zone. The patches are a mess and mass of debris and junk, human and otherwise collected from all corners. From discarded electronics, to children toys...it is a profusion of waste. The chief concentration though is as usual - plastic, abundant and unbiodegradable.

STATES TIDY UP

A look at the states that yielded the most coastal trash collected in the 2006

In very recent news:
According to San Francisco Chronicle,
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Plans to Institute Policy that Would Fine for bad recycling practices.

If residents or businesses don't separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped.

The plan to require proper sorting of refuse would be the nation's first mandatory recycling and composting law. It would direct garbage collectors to inspect the trash to make sure it is put into the right blue, black or green bin, according to a draft of the legislation prepared by the city's Department of the Environment.

"If we're truly going to be the city we promote ourselves to be, a world-class, 21st century city that advances its values and principles, we're going to have to try new things," Newsom said Thursday. "People are used to doing things a certain way. And when you change that, they say it can't be done. Well, we've proved them wrong."

"something extraordinarily impressive"

AKA LollaPallooza (slang for)
Friends Anthony and Marcelo have reported in from the Windy City after the first day/night of the show - (pictured). Radiohead must have been amazing. Certainly Rage will be. RadioHead also did a bit from OK Computer - where our all time favourite No Surprises emerged.

Seems there's a rumor/possibility Barack Obama will show up at some point this weekend (w/Wilco). Homeboy, Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails dual it out closing the show. I heard Joe Escalante on his LA radio show (Indie 103.1) say he'd recently seen NIN and the show was off the hook.

Other, In Radiohead .............
This Found On Radiohead's Site re: Internet Neutrality -

RadioHead plays Golden Gate park Aug 22-24th, Outside Lands Festival

the lineup for this includes Tom Petty, Beck, Ben Harper, Wilco, Primus and many others.

Horoscopic

I made up the "HoroScopic" reference for Susan Miller's scopes because they are so epic in comparison to what else is out there. Susan is great; detailed and precise. Have been a fan of her monthly postings for many years now

Get yours now.

Caveat:
We tried this morning for our August and the site is overloaded, ooops. She also mentioned in last months scopes she promised to post the August early as she was so excited for the things it would bring us. Yesterday when I tried the site said it was down for maintenance to post the August, but came back up later with nothing new.
Hope it all gets resolved soon, a testament to how popular she is or some poor server hosting services.
